Sometimes it's at a table in a cafe, sometimes it's at a desk. Some folks have easels, workbenches, fancy tables. For some, the floor suffices, or the couch. The Once and Future Podcast wants to know, where do YOU make? This week we welcome author and editor Jaym Gates to tell us more about her maker space. Be sure to check out her current project, Strange California, on Kickstarter!
What is your favorite thing about this space?
Jaym Gates: I just added a new bookcase, so I have all my contributor copies, current research books, and some other useful stuff there. My favorite part, though, is being able to look out into the garden as I'm working.
What do you make here?
Jaym Gates: Words! I write, edit, and do communications work here. I also occasionally make jewelry, because it's a good way to let my brain recover from the words.
Do you have a particularly special object in your space?
Jaym Gates: Many years ago, I found this beautiful old copy of Tennyson's collected poetical works in the tiny library of my tiny church in rural Northern California. I don't know how it got there, but I read it endlessly, and they finally told me I should keep it. The thing is from the mid-1800s, and I so want to know what journey it took, but now I just treasure it for itself.
If you could improve something about your space, what would it be?
Jaym Gates: I'd really like to go back to my bigger desk. This one works, but it's more cramped than I'm used to.
What are you working on now?
My current project is Strange California, an anthology of SFF inspired by the science fictional history of California. We're live on Kickstarter but ending very soon! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jasonbatt/strange-california-a-speculative-fiction-anthology
