Growing up, Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal played a huge role in the development of my imagination. I've seen the movie countless times, and it's regularly quoted around my house. Brian Froud's concept art still influences the way I see fantasy. Every now and then there would be talk about some new series or movie related to The Dark Crystal story, but to date, nothing has come of it.
Netflix has announced today that they are producing a prequel series to The Dark Crystal film, produced by the Jim Henson Company, with Lisa Henson, Jim Henson's daughter, as one of the executive producers. Here is a teaser:
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will be an all-new adventure set in the world of Thra, focusing on three Gelfing who discover a terrible secret behind the Skeksis power. They decide to go on an epic journey to begin a resistance against the Skeksis and to save the world. There are ten episodes planned for the series so far.
As with all things that stem from childhood loves, news of this series is being received with cautious optimism. It's very exciting to have such a wonderful world being brought to film again--let's hope they do it right!
